I agree with some of the comments. Solar power is a good energy source but more R&D should also go into it to make solar products that are more effecient. You can't use solar at night or on stromy days, that why solar genetation goes hand in hand with batteries so that you can use them to turn lights on at night and the solar panels charge up batteries during the day. We all know batteries are very hardous when they start leaking and are disposed off incorrectly. Also batteries have to be replaced every 3-4 years depending on the quality of the battery. There are however some companies that are comming up that recycle batteries. So this is one of the disadvantages of using solar power.

I guess the biggest prob is that the cheap price of oil has made the world lazy. Some bottled water is more expensive than oil. Unless we change this mentality and start valuing enery alot more then we gonna continue this reluctancy to investing in alternative energy sources

Demand for solar power is rising, and that’s awesome - but so too are costs, no question. Economics 101 tells us that as demand rises, costs actually fall - and that’s spelling trouble for many solar power manufacturers in the US. Demand is rising abroad, but the economic models in other countries are intact. In any new industry, it’s all about cost efficiency and control, and solar power just isn’t there yet. Take a moment to check out our solar power blog - we write all about these theories and more.

You missed a disadvantage. A lot of energy goes into the production of solar panels. This production is a major cause of greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that the panel needs to be in use for approximately 15 years to then start being efficient in terms of the greenhouse gas emissions.
My dads friend is a physics teacher and he attended a seminar on solar panels and this was one of the most interesting disadvantages he said!!

I think solar panels are a great way to save electricity. However, they can not be used at night. Because you need light.
Also I agree with Lydia because she said that you dont need to change the bulbs in them regulary unlike normal lights.

solar panels rock and are a great way to save electricity and money and they are easy to look after and you dont have to change them like lightbulbs

This atricle is totally bias. Plus, some of the advantages are just rephrased and added as totally different advantages. Plus, a lot of times the initial cost of the panels and their installation are not fully recompensated in the time it is used. Don't ge the wrong idea, I'm all for solar panels, but you still need to admit all its faults

@diva shines: well if you can have enough money to invest in both solar and lunar panels, that problem will be solved. everything relies on money,

if solar panels were that good we would use them to replace our major power plants - as we don't they aren't good enough yet..

Also one wonders how much damage to the environment we are doing to produce them? (what is the actual cost...? how much money is being redirected from true energy generation system to this trendy system which is still not sufficient to go anywhere near actually replacing ... people may argue we should put in more money to R&D for this but sadly we will pay the price (it seems) for not having R&D in real power generation systems.... )..

maybe i am too pessimistic or have less belief in the media hype (we hear how wonderful wind power is - but is this actually any good ? )

sorry just my 20 cents....
